The Berlin Blockade was from 24 June 1948 to 11 May 1949. It began when the Soviet Union blocked railway and road access by the three Western powers (the Americans, British, and French) to the Western-occupied sectors of Berlin. The Blockade stopped after the Western powers used airplanes to airlift food and other things that people needed.

The Berlin Blockade was a high point in tensions in the early Cold War, while the Berlin Airlift was the Allied response to the blockade. When World War II came to an end in 1945, the Allied powers (USA, Britain and the Soviet Union) held conferences to discuss how Germany should be divided up upon its defeat. As Berlin sat in East Germany, the blockade isolated the western half of the city from supply of vital coal and fuel (for heating and transport) and food. The Western Allies saw this blockade as an aggressive and ‘illegal’ Soviet move to absorb West Berlin into the Soviet Union, and the precursor to starting a 3rd World War with the Western Allies (the Cold War had begun in effect). There were shortages in West Berlin and many Berliners did leave the city. However, by May 1949 (11 months after it began!) it was clear the blockade of Berlin had failed.

To prevent the mass migration of East Germans to the west side of the city, the GDR authorities erected a barbed wire curtain  Soviet. BERLIN BLOCKADE.
